Moana & the Tribe blend haka, funk, and dub with powerful lyrics, delivering an unmatched sound that has captivated global audiences from the Montreux Jazz Festival to the Sydney Opera House. Led by Moana Maniapoto, a dedicated "artivist," the band draws on Moana's roots in social justice and activism, inspired by her upbringing, heritage, and experiences, including an unforgettable performance for Nelson Mandela.
A trailblazer, Moana was the first non-American to win the Grand Jury Prize at the International Songwriting Contest for her spoken word track "Moko." Inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame and awarded the NZ Art Laureate, Moana’s album Tahi was honoured with the 2019 Taite Music Classic Album award.
In 2022, Moana released a remake of “AEIOU” on NZ's Parliament steps to mark the 1972 Māori Language petition. Her song "Aio Ana" was later performed at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, viewed by 200,000 live and broadcast to 100 million.
In 2024, she and her longtime collaborators and co-writers Paddy Free and Te Manahau Scotty Morrison released her sixth studio album ONO. Entirely in te reo Māori and inspired by traditional incantations, each song features a guest vocalist singing in their native language.
